8. Quick Exam Numbers / Facts – Memorise These

  • Written particulars: no later than the beginning of employment.
  • Guarantee payment: £30/day, maximum 5 workless days in 3 months (training material figure).
  • Medical suspension: up to 26 weeks’ pay (training material).
  • Maternity: SMP maximum 39 weeks; maternity leave 52 weeks; 10 KIT days; 2 weeks compulsory maternity leave (training material).
  • Parental leave: 18 weeks per child; SPL notice: 8 weeks; SPL KIT: 20 days per parent.
  • Redundancy consultation: 20–99 = 30 days; 100+ = 45 days.
  • Redundancy payment: normally at least 2 years’ service; maximum 20 years counted.
  • Redundancy calculation: ½ week (21 or below), 1 week (22–40), 1½ weeks (41+).
  • SSP: first 3 qualifying days unpaid; linked PIWs within 56 days; maximum 28 weeks; self-certification up to 7 days.
  • Notice: employer 1 week after 1 month; then 1 week per complete year from 2 years; maximum 12 weeks. Employee: 1 week after 1 month under the material.
  • Agency workers: equal basic terms after 12 weeks in the same job.
  • Pension records: 6 years generally; 4 years for opt-out requests.
  • Working time: 48-hour average week; 17-week/4-month reference; 20-minute break after 6 hours; 11 hours daily rest; 24 hours weekly rest; 28 days holiday.
  • Unfair dismissal: normal 2-year qualifying period in the material; written reasons after 2 years, supplied within 14 days.
  • Industrial action: 50% ballot turnout; 40% support threshold for important public services; 14 days’ notice; normally commence within 6 months.
  • Picketing: The Code of Practice suggests no more than 6 pickets at a workplace entrance.
