10. COSHH – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
COSHH controls workers' exposure to hazardous substances.
Hazardous substances include very toxic, toxic, harmful, corrosive or irritant substances, plus relevant micro-organisms and substantial airborne dust.
Carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment before exposure.
First seek to eliminate exposure; otherwise use effective controls such as extraction, enclosure or ventilation.
PPE should not be the primary control where engineering or organisational measures are possible.
Monitor exposure where required and keep records.
Use health surveillance where necessary.
Provide suitable information, instruction and training.
