- COSHH controls workers' exposure to hazardous substances.
- Hazardous substances include very toxic, toxic, harmful, corrosive or irritant substances, plus relevant micro-organisms and substantial airborne dust.
- Carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment before exposure.
- First seek to eliminate exposure; otherwise use effective controls such as extraction, enclosure or ventilation.
- PPE should not be the primary control where engineering or organisational measures are possible.
- Monitor exposure where required and keep records.
- Use health surveillance where necessary.
- Provide suitable information, instruction and training.
