10. COSHH – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002

  • COSHH controls workers' exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Hazardous substances include very toxic, toxic, harmful, corrosive or irritant substances, plus relevant micro-organisms and substantial airborne dust.
  • Carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment before exposure.
  • First seek to eliminate exposure; otherwise use effective controls such as extraction, enclosure or ventilation.
  • PPE should not be the primary control where engineering or organisational measures are possible.
  • Monitor exposure where required and keep records.
  • Use health surveillance where necessary.
  • Provide suitable information, instruction and training.
