16. LOLER – Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998

  • LOLER covers equipment used for lifting or lowering loads and relevant attachments/fixings/supports.
  • Equipment must be suitable in strength and application.
  • Equipment must be correctly positioned and secured for a stable lift.
  • Safe working loads must be clearly marked where required, including different configurations and equipment designed to lift people.
  • Employees need practical and theoretical knowledge of lifting equipment and its risks.
  • Carry out a risk assessment for lifting operations.
  • Equipment must be maintained, examined and inspected by a competent person.
  • The material states inspection every 12 months for equipment subject to deterioration, or every 6 months for lifting people, unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
