18. Risk Assessment

  • Hazard = anything that can cause harm, e.g. chemicals, electricity, machinery or working from ladders.
  • Risk = the chance, high or low, that someone will be harmed by a hazard.
  • Risk assessment identifies hazards, considers likelihood and consequences, and introduces controls to minimise risk.

18.1 Five Key Steps of Risk Assessment

  • Identify potential hazards.
  • Decide who might be harmed and how.
  • Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions.
  • Record the findings and implement them.
  • Review the assessment regularly and update it when necessary.
