Vehicles subject to ‘O’ licensing

  • Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight used for trade or business require an ‘O’ licence.
  • Three types of ‘O’ licence:
    • Restricted — own-account work in the UK and abroad.
    • Standard National — hire/reward work within the UK.
    • Standard International — hire/reward work within the UK and abroad.
  • An operating centre is where a goods vehicle is normally kept when not in use.
  • One licence covers operating centres within the same Traffic Area.
  • Separate licences are required where operating centres are in different Traffic Areas.
