8. Drawing Up Drivers' Hours Schedules – Exam Technique

  • Drivers' hours case studies are expected in the R2 examination.
  • Questions may ask you to identify illegalities or construct a legal schedule.
  • Case studies normally focus on EU hours regulations rather than Domestic rules.
  • Use the 24-hour clock, e.g. 20:15.
  • Show the duration of every activity.
  • For driving, show time and route where appropriate.
  • Driving time = distance ÷ average speed; convert decimal hours to minutes by multiplying the decimal by 60.
  • For international journeys, check local time; the material states major continental European destinations are normally one hour ahead of UK time.
  • Always consider both Regulation 561/2006 and Working Time requirements.
  • If a schedule becomes illegal, the normal examination approach described says no further marks are awarded.
  • Aim for the earliest possible finishing time without unnecessary breaks/rests.
