9. APPLICATIONS FOR A TRADE LICENCE

  • Applications are made to DVLA, Swansea.
  • Trade licences normally begin on either 1 January or 1 July.
  • They can normally be bought for 6 or 12 months.
  • A first trade licence is termed 'probationary' and is issued for between 6 and 12 months so that renewal reaches the normal January/July point.
  • A holder can apply for as many trade licences as required.
  • Each licence has a pair of trade plates.
  • The plates have red letters on a white background.
  • An appeal against refusal to issue a trade licence should, according to the training material, be made to the Secretary of State for Transport within 28 days of refusal.
