• A subcontractor is a haulier who agrees with a carrier to fulfil part of the carrier's contract.

7.1 CARRIERS' RESPONSIBILITIES

• The original carrier has overall responsibility for ensuring the subcontract conditions are complied with.
• The transport operation must be carried out in accordance with the carrier's conditions of carriage.
• The carrier must ensure the subcontractor has adequate goods-in-transit insurance for the operation.
• The original contractor remains responsible to its client for claims arising from the work, even though the work has been subcontracted.
• The carrier does not have to reveal to the subcontractor the amount being charged to the customer.

7.2 SUB-CONTRACTORS' RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out the operation within a reasonable time.
• Keep the carrier informed of delays, damage or theft.
• Return all receipts to the original carrier.
• Have adequate insurance covering the goods being carried.
• Carry out the operation in accordance with the contract and the contractor's conditions of carriage.
• A subcontractor may subcontract to another haulier, but remains liable to the original carrier.
