• Construction and Use Regulations allow standard vehicle width and length to be exceeded by wide or projecting loads subject to specified conditions.

9.1 WIDE LOADS

• A standard vehicle/trailer may carry a wider load subject to the stated projection limits.
• A projection must not exceed 305 mm on either side and must not create an overall width over 2.9 m, unless an indivisible-load exception applies.
• Indivisible load over 2.9 m but not over 3.5 m: notify police 2 days in advance and fit red-and-white striped marker boards.
• Indivisible load over 3.5 m: also carry an attendant.

9.2 FORWARD PROJECTION

• Over 2 m but not over 3.05 m: end marker board, side marker boards on both sides of the projection, and an attendant.
• Over 3.05 m but not over 4.5 m: end marker board, side marker boards on both sides, attendant, and 2 days' notice to police.
• Over 4.5 m: same requirements plus a second side marker board on each side of the projection.

9.3 REARWARD PROJECTION

• Over 1 m but not over 2 m: make the projection clearly visible.
• Over 2 m but not over 3.05 m: end marker board.
• Over 3.05 m but not over 5 m: end marker board, side marker boards on both sides, attendant, and 2 days' notice to police.
• Over 5 m: same as above plus a second side marker board on each side.
• Marker boards must conform to the C & U Regulations 1986 requirements and be adequately illuminated at night.
• For a convoy of three or more vehicles where each would individually require an attendant, the source states that the attendant requirement only applies to the front and rear vehicles.

9.4 OVERALL LENGTH

• Exceptionally long loads may require vehicles such as extendable 'trombone' semi-trailers.
• 2 days' notice to police and a statutory attendant are required when the following lengths are exceeded:
• Rigid vehicle and load: more than 18.65 m overall.
• Articulated vehicle: more than 18.65 m for semi-trailer and load; tractor-unit length is ignored.
• Vehicle/trailer combination: more than 25.9 m overall.

9.5 FITTING OF LAMPS AND REFLECTORS

• Projecting loads must have lamps and reflectors where the prescribed limits are exceeded.
• Lateral projection: if the outermost projection is more than 400 mm from the outermost obligatory front/rear position lamp, the lamp must be transferred to the load and supplemented by the appropriate reflector, or an additional lamp and reflector must be fitted.
• Forward projection over 1 m: additional front lamp and white reflector.
• Rearward projection over 1 m: red rear lamp and red rear reflector.
• Projecting-load lamps must be illuminated between sunset and sunrise and in seriously reduced visibility.
• If the load obscures an obligatory lamp, reflector or rear marking, transfer it to the load or fit additional equipment.
