SAFETY OF LOADS ON VEHICLES The DfT Code of Practice – Safety of Loads on Vehicles gives general and specific guidance for safe loading. 2.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS The load restraint system must withstand at least the total weight of the load forwards. The restraint system must withstand at least 50% of the load weight backwards and sideways. Before loading, check that the load platform, bodywork and anchorage points are suitable and in good condition. Check loading documents against the vehicle's gross and axle weights to prevent overloading. Rearrange the load after each collection/delivery if necessary to prevent individual axle overloading. Where practicable, place the load against the headboard to prevent movement. Load heavy items at the bottom and lighter items on top to keep the centre of gravity low. Spread the load evenly over the platform. Distribute the load around the longitudinal centre line so one side is not overloaded. Use load-spreading devices where relatively small items have significant weight. Use anchorage points, headboards and internal partitions to minimise load movement. Securing equipment includes steel wire rope, chains, webbing, nets, ropes, clamps and twistlocks. Securing methods include lashings, baulking and friction between the load and vehicle platform. 2.2 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIFIC TYPES OF LOAD Specific guidance covers general freight, metal, timber, loose bulk loads, pallets, containers, engineering plant and piggy-back carriage of vehicles. 2.3 APPENDICES The Code includes material covering the safety of loads, dangerous goods by road and the transit of animals by road.
