• All goods vehicles and trailers subject to the Plating and Testing Regulations must be examined every year at a DVSA Testing Station or another approved location.
• Approved locations are called Authorised Testing Facilities (ATFs).
• ATFs must be equipped to DVSA standards, and tests are conducted by visiting DVSA examiners.
• ATFs may charge fees in addition to the basic test fee to recover capital investment.

6.1 VEHICLES

• Annual examination: in the month of each anniversary of the first registration.
• If tested no more than 2 months before expiry of the current certificate, the new certificate retains the old anniversary expiry date.
• Example: due by 31 May and tested on 5 April → new certificate valid until 31 May the following year.

6.2 TRAILERS

• Annual examination: in the month of each anniversary of the first examination.
• If tested up to 2 months before the due date, the existing anniversary date is retained.

6.3 PROCEDURE

• Single test bookings can be made by telephone to DVSA, through the GOV.UK online service, or by contacting an ATF.
• Bookings may be made up to 93 days in advance.
• Required booking information includes vehicle registration number or trailer identification number; vehicle make and model; HGV type (articulated or rigid) and axle number; trailer axle type/number where applicable; and a debit or credit card.
• Multiple vehicle bookings require registration with DVSA and a pre-funded account.
• Form VTG1 is required for a test where a ministry plate has not previously been issued.
• Vehicles failing a first or annual test require a retest.
• If defects are minor and the vehicle is re-tested the same day or next working day, no re-test charge is made.
• If re-tested at the same station within 14 days, only defective items are re-tested.
• After 14 days, a full retest takes place.
• Test and re-test fees can change; the material advises checking with a test station or Goods Vehicle Centre if in doubt.
