7. Quick Exam Numbers / Facts – Memorise These

  • 3,500 kg GVW – rigid vehicle threshold for plating/testing.
  • 1,020 kg ULW – trailer threshold (excluding semi-trailers).
  • October 2012 – ECWVTA applied to heavy trucks/trailers in the training material and to goods-carrying trailers.
  • 14 days – VTG6 plate to be fitted inside the cab after issue.
  • First examination – by the end of the month of the first registration anniversary (vehicles) / first examination anniversary (trailers).
  • 2 months – early annual test window that preserves the existing anniversary date.
  • 93 days – maximum advance booking period stated.
  • 1 month – minimum lead time stated for first trailer examination applications.
  • 14 days – within this period after failure at the same station, only defective items are re-tested; the same/next working day minor-defect re-test is free.
  • VTG6 – DfT/DVSA vehicle plating plate; VTG7 – plating certificate; VTG6A – trailer plating plate; VTG5A – successful trailer test certificate.
  • ECWVTA – European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval; NSSTA – National Small Series Type Approval; IVA – Individual Vehicle Approval.
