1. Introduction

  • Driver licensing controls which vehicles a driver is legally entitled to drive.
  • Vocational goods vehicle licences cover larger goods vehicles and combinations.
  • The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is responsible for the vocational driver testing system.
  • The DVLA issues the driving licence and administers driver licensing records.
  • A driver must hold the correct category of entitlement for the vehicle being driven.
  • A driver must also meet the relevant medical, age and Driver CPC requirements where applicable.
  • Employers must check that drivers have the correct and valid licence entitlement and Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
