Employers' Responsibilities It is an offence for an employer to cause or permit someone to drive unless the person has the correct and valid licence entitlement. Where Driver CPC applies, the employer must also ensure the driver has a valid DQC. Employers must check that the driver's licence is current and valid. Employers must check that the entitlement matches the vehicle to be driven. Employers must ensure minimum age requirements are met. Employers must establish a regular licence-checking system. Checks should continue throughout employment rather than being carried out only when a driver is first recruited. DVLA online checking can show the vehicles a driver is entitled to drive. It can also show penalty points, disqualification status, digital tachograph status and DQC categories/expiry dates. An operator can use the driver's last 8 licence-number characters and a driver-generated check code. The material states that the check code is valid for a maximum of 21 days and can only be used once. Alternative checks can be made by contacting DVLA with the driver's permission or using the postal procedure.
