18. Driving Licence Number

  • The driving licence number is a unique identifier.
  • The example in the training material follows a structured format based on surname, date of birth, initials, check characters and licence issue number.
  • The first 5 characters are based on the surname; 9s are used where necessary to make 5 characters.
  • The next 6 characters encode the date of birth in the stated YMMDDY format.
  • For females, 50 is added to the month.
  • Characters 12 and 13 are the initials of the driver's forenames; where there is no middle name, a 9 is used.
  • Characters 14–16 are computer check numbers or letters.
  • The final number(s) indicate the licence issue number.
